Create a Vision for the Life You Want

Updated: Nov 4

Creating a compelling vision of the life you want is one of the most effective strategies for achieving the life of your dreams. Perhaps the best way to look at the concept of a life vision is as a map to help guide you to take the best actions and make the right choices that help propel you toward your best life.

Without a vision, minutes turn to hours days to years, and before you know it, you wasted the best years of your life. How is it possible that everybody around you makes progress, does what she loves while you’re still stuck at the same job? Sounds familiar?

Experts and life success stories support the idea that with a vision in mind, you are more likely to succeed far beyond what you could otherwise achieve without a clear vision. Think of crafting your life vision as mapping a path to your personal and professional dreams. Life satisfaction and personal happiness are within reach. The harsh reality is that if you don’t develop your own vision, you’ll allow other people and circumstances to direct the course of your life.

Vision gives clarity. When you have clarity, you know not only where you’re going, but you also have a better idea of how to get there. And the more time you spend on this vision, your subconscious works to figure things out.

Most people will never take the time to craft a compelling vision. It’s just the truth of the matter.

However, you’re different. You’re reading this article because you already understand the importance of vision and you have things you’d like to achieve.

I never thought about creating a vision for my life. Not because I thought it was stupid or a waste of time, it just only never crossed my mind. It wasn’t until I started to feel stuck in life until I discovered the real power a compelling vision can hold for those willing to invest some serious thinking.

What Do You Want? The question sounds deceptively simple, but it’s often the most difficult to answer. It’s important to remind yourself that a life of fulfillment does not usually happen by chance, but by design.

It’s helpful to ask some thought-provoking questions to help you discover the possibilities of what you want out of life. Consider every aspect of your life, personal and professional, tangible and intangible.

A vision enables you to create your future proactively. If you read biographies or hear successful people speak, they all talk about their vision and how they had to become who they are today to be able to fulfill the vision they set for their life.

It’s hard to tell if the action leads to motivation or motivation leads to action. But either way, if you create a vision for your life, you will have a powerful source of motivation, pulling you forward towards achieving this vision. Why do I need a vision if I already set goals for my life? A vision is where it all comes together. Goals are each just a small part of a bigger picture. And ideally, all of your goals should serve the purpose of achieving your vision. Now, try to visualize your perfect life by answering the following 25 questions.

1. What comes to your mind if you see yourself fully satisfied in the future?

4. If money wasn’t an issue, what job would you do? (NASA Researcher, CEO, National Speaker, Caregiver, Author, Philanthropist, Internet Guru, Coach) There are lots of ways to make money, and depending on how you make your income now, your vision may or may not be different from what you already do. If you enjoy your work, then it simply becomes a part of the ideal day you visualize. If you do not, spend some time thinking about the things that you may like to do to earn money. Minimalism may open up opportunities to find your vision. There are many ways that you can alter your lifestyle to require less income or perhaps less consistent income.

13. Describe your ideal day.

Sample: Waking up on the beach in Negril, Jamaica. Rolling down the sand until I roll right into the water. Parasailing, Reggae, Shopping, Naps, Cocktails on the Beach, Friends and laughter. Ideal. At home (San Diego at the moment) it would start with a good night’s sleep. Since those are so rare these days. I'm tempted to stop there. Great day already. Up in the morning for coffee on the patio, play with the dog, play with the cats. Stay in my jammies or nightgown until noon and have the house to myself. Read a good book while having coffee between play. A quick nap in the afternoon. Afternoon, a visit from my son is always nice, a shopping trip to out of the way places with a bit of disposable cash. Giving someone a gift they love or a compliment that makes them smile. Nice touches all. A movie I watch all the way through without interruption. That's a rare thing in my world right now. And while I'm watching, hitting the chocolate stash. An afternoon/evening reading (on the porch again) is always delicious. Cooking a nice dinner, eating on the patio among all the pets and hummingbirds. Those around me in a good and generous mood. Throw in an assortment of art projects, gardening, walking, music, laughing, friends, or alone time.

In the end, we are often not really after possessing or doing something, but after the feeling those things give us. So why not shortcut this process by chasing the mood right away?

Here’s a sample vision: I live with my wife and two kids in a modern dream home next to the lake Thun with a stunning view on the alps. My house has a beautiful garden, a swimming pool, a sauna, and a gym. It’s the place I feel at home. I drive the cars I want and have the time of my life. I’m always there for my family, the people I love, and my community. I live in abundance and never have to worry about money.

I help and inspire people all around the world to rise to their full potential and become the best version they can be. I travel the world for at least three months a year, and every week I go to a new place in Switzerland, so I can get to know my home country.

I always work on myself, and I’m continually learning. I teach people everything I know, and I never hold back. I work with the best coaches and mentors to be able to deliver my best work to the people who believe in me. I read one book a week, and I always take action on what I learn because knowledge without action is worthless. I have unstoppable energy and the body of my dreams. I master the hardest exercises while being flexible and fit. I am never sick and feel younger than ever. I always eat the best quality food available. In my presence, people feel happy, and there’s no need for them to be anybody else than themselves.

Write your vision down

Now try to write down your vision. Don’t focus on how you get there to make a statement that describes your ideal life. Write in the first person and write the statements as if they were already a reality. Write in as much detail as you like.
